Summary of the House Committee Version of the Bill

HCS SB 399 -- JAILS

SPONSOR: Caskey (Mayer)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee on
Crime Prevention and Public Safety by a vote of 17 to 0.

Current law makes it a crime to bring a controlled substance,
alcohol, or a weapon into a correctional facility. This
substitute clarifies that this prohibition also applies to any
city or county jail, including private jails.

FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Net Cost to General Revenue Fund of Less
Than $100,000 in FY 2004, FY 2005, and FY 2006.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the bill is necessary to remove
any ambiguity as to whether the provision applies to jails.

Testifying for the bill was Senator Caskey.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
